"US telco Sprint is offering to help businesses monitor the whereabouts of their staff by tracking their mobile phones signals - an innovation that is likely to wash up on New Zealand's shores sometime soon. Sprint's "Precision Locator" service, announced last week, uses the signals that are constantly sent from mobile phones to cellphone towers to get a fix on staff - making it fundamentally different from the satellite-based GPS technology that many New Zealand businesses use to track vehicle fleets. So long as employees have their mobiles turned on and with them, businesses can view their approximate location on a PC using web-based GIS software which displays their position on electronic maps that can be panned and zoomed. . .
