Digital Practice of Law

A daily digest of cases, comments and practical references for applying technology to the practice of law and litigation support.

WiFi Finder

Canary Wireless Digital Hotspotter. "Wi-fi finders were all the rage a year or so ago, and they continue to grow in popularity. First off, they are handy for people that travel frequently and need a handy way to find free wireless hotspots so they can get some work done. But Wi-Fi finders/detectors are also used to test the strength and reach of a home- or office-based wireless network. They are much easier to use than walking around balancing a laptop in your hand. . . "

WiFi in the Courthouse

(6-1-04) Baltimore courthouses join wireless age. "There's a buzz around Baltimore's Circuit Courthouse, and it has nothing to do with the cicada invasion. It's the hum of laptop computers connecting to the Internet using wireless technology that was recently installed in the Clarence M. Mitchell Courthouse and Courthouse East downtown, making them the first wireless-ready courthouses in Maryland."

Internet Phone Calls

Why Your Next Phone Call May Be Online
"Voice over IP is cheap, easy, and available. Here's how it works. It started as a geek-out for corporate penny-pinchers. But now making phone calls using voice over Internet protocol is resonating with consumers. VoIP startups are promising cheap - sometimes free - calls to anywhere in the world. Stick wireless networking in the mix and voilà, voice over Wi-Fi. Add it all up and you get a disruptive technology that's making conventional phone companies nervous. Already 10 percent of all calls are transmitted with VoIP, and the adoption curve is arching steeply skyward."

"Wireless security for home networks is in the spotlight following an unusual arrest in Canada, where a man stands accused of downloading child pornography over a hijacked Wi-Fi connection. Toronto police said they stopped a car last week for a traffic infraction when they found the driver naked from the waist down with a laptop computer on the front seat, playing a pornographic video that had apparently been streamed over a residential wireless hot spot. The driver was charged with possession, distribution and creation of child pornography, as well as theft of telecommunications--a first in Canada, according to local authorities.
